What is a normal hair loss?

Most men and women experience some form of hair loss baldness or thinning hair during their life. During a normal hair growth, there is a cycle of hair loss. There are three main phases of the individual hair growth cycle: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Anagen is the active hair growth phase. It lasts for about 4 to 5 years. In the 5th year, the catagen stage evolves, a period of regression of the hair follicle. Ultimately, the hair follicle falls out as a resting period, the telogen stage. By the 6th year, new hair grows and the hair growth cycle begins again.

Normal hair growth

The number of hair on a healthy scalp is approximately 100,000. On a normal human scalp about 90 percent of follicles is continually in the anagen stage of the hair growth stage.  On average, 50 to 100 hair are lost from the head every day in a normal hair growth cycle. As hair fall out naturally, it is replaced by a new hair from the same follicle located just beneath the skin surface and new hair grow in. Hair starts to recede when a fewer number of new hair is in the re-growth stage. As we age, the hair cycle slowly becomes disrupted and  more hair is shed, the hair re-growth process may slow or stop. Thinning or baldness areas may occur. In time hair growth stops completely and baldness results.

Hair loss term: "telogen effluvium"

Telogen effluvium is a common type of hair loss caused when a large percentage of scalp hair are shifted into "shedding" phase and later the re-growth stage occurs. Stress such as chemotherapy causes a hair loss.  Cosmetic alternatives, such as hair replacements or wigs, can help conceal female hair loss with great success!

If an excessive hair loss is noticed:

It is important to seek a doctor's medical advice early to check on a possible cause for the individual hair loss. Correct diagnostic taking corrective adverse events on hair loss are especially critical at the onset of hair loss symptoms to prevent scarring and large balding areas from being a permanent damage. Female hair loss page goes in-depth on the importance of seeking a doctor’s help and properly evaluated on the onset of hair loss in women. Male hair loss page deals with hair loss in men.
