The Different Types of Hair Extensions

Clip-in, tape-in, weaves, bonded, fusion, or micro-link are different extensions types with different attachment methods. However, each can be of human hair or synthetic hair. The different types of extensions can be confusing for the buyer. You have hair loss, and you want to add some density and volume to your hair. What is the best choice for you?

  • Clip-in hair extensions
  • Tape-in hair
  • Weaves
  • Custom human hair extensions
  • 100% Remy extensions
  • Fusion hair addition
  • Micro-link

What is the major difference?

Hair extension and all hair additions, hairpieces, or wigs consist of human hair or synthetic hair. Some gray hair units have a combination of both synthetic hair and human hair.

Synthetic hair is manufactured plastic, nylon fibers and contains no human hair. You cannot color synthetic hair, and heat can damage its form. So not use curling irons, straighteners, or blow dryers. The hair will melt or severely damage.

On the other hand, human hair looks and feels the most natural. You can style and treat human hair extensions just like your own hair. It is best not to combine synthetic and human hair. The exception can be, adding synthetic grey hair to a human hairpiece if you want some grey hair showing. Synthetic hair will not take on colors.

Clip-in Hair Extensions

Clip-in is the least damaging hair extensions used because it does not use harmful chemicals, glues, or pressure. Usually, the hair comes in as inferior quality hair. The clip-in extension comes in a strand of contoured pieces, attached at the base with either fabric or silicone. Clips come attached already and ready to use. Each clip snaps open and closes with ease. Indeed, you can quickly put on clip-ins yourself. Also, Clip-in lasts for up to a year or more with proper care and regular use.

These extensions use a semi-permanent method. The row of extensions is pre-taped. The stylist lays flat this weft of hair glued together and then attaches your hair at the roots. A heating tool melts the glue. Here is the name of the tape-in. The process takes less than 1 hour to apply. The reglue method frequency depends on how fast your hair grows. Tape-ins generally last for six to eight weeks. However, the hair itself usually lasts between 6-8.

With tape-in extensions, you have to be very careful when using conditioners or other hair products because these products can cause the tape to come off.

Sew-In /Weave

Weave hair is applied by braiding the natural hair and then sewing in the weaves extensions. You can read more on weave hair addition and hair loss at To minimize hair loss, the maximum amount of time you should have a weave in your hair is four months.

Semi-permanent bond Applications

Fusion hair extensions

Fusion hair extensions are bonded to the natural hair using adhesives, clamps, and glue guns. Subsequently, this type of extensions application method is damaging to your hair. These types of hair extensions need re-application within two months or more as the natural hair grows. Fusion hair applications last between 3 to 4 months, and cold fusion application lasts up to 6 months. Additionally, this method can cause hair loss, breakage, and scalp irritation.

Microbead hair extensions, beaded weft, or micro-link are applied using tiny beads to attach small wefts of hair to the natural hair. The hair is clamped down to secure the addition in place and does not require glue. For example, Microlink hair extensions use a micro-loop in bead clamps. To clarify, attach small amounts of wefts of hair on small sections of natural hair with a small silicone-lined bead. The stylist uses a tool to secure the Microlink to the hair and tighten it to hold it in place. It takes a professional 2 – 6 hours to apply. Further, MicroLink hair extensions need reattachment every 2 – 3 months as the natural hair grows and the links move away from the scalp. These kinds of hair extensions can be very pricey, and they require maintenance every 6-8 weeks.

Microlink hair extensions can damage the hair if the bead is too tight, causing pressure and pulling at the roots. Moreover, on removing time, if not correctly done, hair is pulled out. In conclusion, the result is hair loss.

What is the best type of hair extensions?

Get the human hair extensions for a more natural overall look. However, if you are not inclined to have a semi or permanent hair addition and are not handy with hairstyling, synthetic hair may be best for you. Here, your best option is with a clip-in type unit. You can put it on yourself in less than ten minutes, blend the hair in, and you are ready to go. Human hair clip-in needs a little styling before use. Indeed, you do not need to spend hours at a salon to attach your hair addition. Remove it before bed to prevent tangling or tension on your natural hair.
