Thyroid Hair Loss Problem

Hair Loss caused by thyroid & symptoms

Thyroid hair loss symptoms

Rapid hair loss is one of the symptoms associated with a thyroid problem, with large amounts of hair falling out in the shower or sink. The hair’s texture is dry, coarse, or easily tangled. Itchy scalp and weight gain or loss, fatigue, or sleeplessness are common thyroid problem symptoms.

Dallas, TX hair restoration specialist explains a diffused hair density on the entire scalp rather than balding areas with thyroid hair loss. Most likely, the hair may be thinner above the ears, front, and temples. A unique symptom of hypothyroidism is hair loss on the outer edge of the eyebrows. Also, there may be a general loss of body hair from areas other than the head.

Thyroid hair loss & Diagnosis

As for any medical issues, consult with your doctor. Severe and prolonged hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause loss of hair.

In 2008, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism presented the first evidence that human hair follicles are direct targets of thyroid hormones. Hair loss occurs when an enzyme converts the hormone testosterone on the scalp to dihydrotestosterone. DHT attacks the hair follicle and shrinks it. For that reason, hair becomes thinner and may stop growing entirely.

Hair will regrow back with successful thyroid disorder treatment; be patient; it will take several months. Also, the hair loss will likely slow down and eventually stop once hormone levels are stabilized and in the normal range. The hair’s total thickness sometimes will not return to its original pre-thyroid state.

Thyroid Hormone & Treatment

Prolonged or excessive hair loss is a side effect of thyroid medications. If you are taking levothyroxine (i.e., Synthroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid) as your thyroid hormone replacement and still losing hair, you may need to talk to your doctor again. Prolonged or excessive hair loss is a side effect of these drugs for some people.

Alternative Treatment

The book, Living Well With Hypothyroidism, recommends “evening primrose oil (also known as EPO)” as a nutritional supplement for hair growth. In his book, “Solved: The Riddle of Illness,” Stephen Langer, M.D., recommends evening primrose oil for symptoms of insufficient fatty acid, which are very similar to hypothyroidism. He writes that primrose oil is an excellent source of essential fatty acids.

MEp90 Laser Treatments

Laser hair restoration is a non-invasive treatment for hair loss. Various factors will influence whether or not laser light therapy will work for you. These factors include how soon you begin the treatment after hair loss and your body’s response to the procedures.

Most importantly, compliance with your treatment plan is a must. Thriving, healthy regrowth of hair also depends on the number of cells that are merely dormant versus those that have lost the ability to regrow hair. With laser treatments, look for hair to be softer, shinier, and healthier-looking within the first few weeks of hair treatments.
